The Beginning

My motorcycle adventure started in the early eighties with a Yamaha XT250.

The Plan

It has been two and a half years since my last post but I have not forgotten about this blog.

This blog was created with a purpose and mission in mind and during all this time I have been dreaming and planning the next steps. There was a time when the countdown timer showed over 750 days and I have watched the counter slowly tick down the days passing the 700 mark, then 600, 500, 400 and finally 365 days, less than a year to go. Today it stands at 120, about 4 months to go, and now it seems time is speeding up all of a sudden.

My mind has never been the same since finishing the trip to Alaska in 2012. For a long time after completing the trip getting up in the morning and going to work was torture. I couldn’t stop reading blogs and following other riders in the midst of doing long distance adventures. There are a few riders I have been following for over two years and the desire to make my own long distance ride grew every minute almost to the point of obsession. I watched YouTube videos constantly and probably drove my wife insane with all the stories I kept reading and sharing with her.

I needed a few things to happen in life before I could write the details on this blog. Now with my daughter about to start her senior year in college and my travel fund growing, I feel I’m ready to go on a new adventure before I get too old.  Below is a rough map of the planned route.

I will most likely quit my job at the end of June, since I don’t believe they will give me the time I need to complete my trip. I have worked at my current job for a little over 5 years and it will be a sad day when I have to say goodbye to a great group of people, but in the end it’s just a job, a way to put food on the table and fund the adventure bucket.

The plan is to cut across the USA through the south passing through a few places on my bucket list and stop in San Diego, a city I have yet to visit. After a day or two to relax, I will cross the border into Baja California, the first of many borders and head south till the land ends in Ushuaia, Argentina.

It hasn’t been easy convincing my family that everything will be okay and that I will take all precautions to be safe at all times.  The average person listening to the news thinks anything south of the border is out to get you.  I have realized most non-riding people don’t understand the type of community that has built around long distance riders.  We all help each other through various forms of Social media.  There are forums and pages dedicated to motorcycle world travelers and I have read lots of blogs, seen lots of YouTube videos and became friends with current and former world travelers.

There’s a world out there to be visited and experienced.  I’m ready to embark on a new adventure and to experience new countries, the people and the food, the culture and the sights of Central and South America.
